Interior Architecture + Design : Nubuor Designs
Nubuor Designs was brought on for a comprehensive, multi-year renovation of a historic 1800s estate on Great Cranberry Island, Maine. This ambitious project encompasses four separate buildings on the property, each requiring thoughtful restoration and interior design that respects the island's heritage while meeting modern living standards. Located off the coast of Mount Desert Island near Acadia National Park, Great Cranberry Island presents unique logistical challenges where all materials and furnishings must be transported by ferry, requiring meticulous planning and coordination.
Over the course of several years, we've provided complete interior design services including space planning, furniture design and selection, material sourcing, and renovation management for this remarkable island retreat. The result honors the estate's 1800s character while creating comfortable, functional spaces for generations to come.
This project is ongoing.
Main House: Inspiration Images + Mood Boards
Appropriately named, the main structure on this property is also the oldest. It has 4 beds and is where the primary bedroom is located. Set further into the land, it enjoys great views of the boat house beyond, while also being protected by the trees on the property. The brief for the interior design of this building is to embrace the historic charm, quirks, and well-lived in quality of a home that has well, been lived in.
Designing and renovating on a Maine island isn't for the faint of heart. Every piece of lumber, every furniture delivery, every can of paint must be carefully coordinated and transported by ferry. Weather delays can push timelines. Access is limited. And yet, the results are worth every challenge. Working on Great Cranberry Island has taught us the importance of meticulous planning, strong relationships with local contractors and ferry services, and flexibility when Mother Nature has other plans. This multi-year, four-building project showcases not just design expertise but logistical mastery proving that even the most remote locations can have beautifully designed, thoughtfully renovated spaces. The island's dramatic views of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park remind us why preserving these historic properties matters.

This structure is located mere feet from the water. It enjoys more than 180 degree fews of the private beach. The brief for the design for this space is relaxed furniture paired with and light fabrics and strategic pops of color. This no fuss laid back interior design approach allows the uninterrupted views of the water to be the focal point of this house.
